Alright, we seem to have managed to get away. Not unscathed, though. Which is why I'm starting this conversation in the first place. Medicine and botany are skills I never really managed to pick up. It's a skill we really need, considering the injuries and whatever those dark swordsmen did to cause some of us to fall unconscious.

If anybody can help with that, right now is the time to speak up.

[Dixon shows up on the mirror network. He's looked better, but he's also looked worse. Unlike the last few days, he doesn't look like he's about to keel over and die of exhaustion (as he had predicted to Hiccup before the hike), but he does have the expression of someone distracted by pain. Something to do with the evil, evil, evil-looking knife wound in his back.]

Ginger's good for stomachaches.

Not so much for stab wounds, though. I wish we could find willow bark. That would at least help with the pain.

What's it look like? Because getting knifed hurts like a bitch.

It's bark from a willow tree. You boil it into a drink.

I'll head out with Toothless and see if Ican find some. Even if someone finds something better, it'll be good to have on hand.

While you're out there, can you look for smokes? Or at least nicotine patches? If you find any abandoned pharmacies or anything.

It'll be a little difficult. I don't actually know what either of those things are.

Most of the English don't even read English.

It's translating itself into whatever the magic language we've been speaking this entire time is, though, so I'll keep an eye out.

Nothing. Most of 'em are illiterate. I'm guessing from the hundreds of thousands of books here that being able to read is a common thing in your time, but it's not in mine.

[Sometimes Dixon really wonders if he was born in the wrong century. He doesn't say it aloud, but he thinks he could stand to live in a time and place where reading and English weren't necessary for everything. Even having clawed and pushed his way through high school, it's still a trial to do paperwork, sort things on a page, put words in order and recognize when they're not.]

Everyone's got to do it where I'm from. You can't really do anything if you can't. Which is a shame, since plenty of folks got plenty of skills that have nothing to do with reading.

I won't argue with that. It's a good skill to have, but I'm not going to look down on anybody who can't.

We'll probably run into some talking bears or gnomes or something who can't, way things are going out here. So we better not look down on them too hard.

When they stab somebody, a splinter breaks off and starts heading for the heart. I can heal normal things a bit but I don't think it's strong enough to stop that. There's supposed to be a plant that can slow the splinter down if we can find some, it's called athelas.

[ This is knowledge that Simmons, quite frankly, never expected to have a use for. ]

It's a weed. It has long leaves and a really strong, sweet smell?

Does it grow in any particular places or environments?

[Fetch quests were nothing new for Imp, but it always helped to know where to start looking, especially when you can no longer search an entire area in seconds.]

It’s common enough to be considered a weed, and, like Simmons said, it smells enough that you can find a patch of it in the dark. You want to look for thickets – shady spots under trees with a lot of bushes and undergrowth. It doesn’t grow without shade.

[ Fictional or not, he saw the Ringwraiths as well. Even if part of him thinks it’s obviously a gimmicked villain, his world is topsy turvy. Sending Bart to forage for athelas doesn’t sound like the worst idea. ]

Does athelas work at all without a king to administer it?

I think it should, though. It's a medicinal plant. You steep it in water and wash the wound with that.

Sounds like plan, then. Toothless and I are already looking for willow bark, I can add finding that to the list.

Any ideas for the unconsciousness, or will the athelas take care of that too?

Then we've got one, maybe two people it should work for. I don't know how precise the magic is, or how good Toothless would be at preparing a poultice.

I wish I could help you find it or triage, but I'm stuck here. And it should help with just about anything but the worst wounds, if it exists.

He'd be terrible at it, if we're being honest. Just a passing stray thought.

I've some knowledge of chemistry... -But she knew it was limited. And her holy magic only seemed to protect others for the moment, not heal them...-

You wouldn't happen to know if anyone here is royalty or something, would you? Apparently athelas works better if it's administered by someone who is.

Yeah, that's apparently what those weapons do. I'll bring the athelas over. Hopefully it'll hold things at bay until we can find somewhere better equipped to handle it.

Do it. I'm little use to anyone as a warrior as it stands. I... am not sure how much longer I'll be able to travel with you at this point.
